The state government has decided to permit athletes to start daily practices and issued a standard operating procedure (SOP) regarding the same amidst COVID-19.

According to a letter issued by the state school education and sports department, it has decided to divide sports into categories; no-contact game, minimal or medium contact game, full-contact game, and water sports. For no contact games such as cycling, archery, shooting etc. the government has asked to practice the regular SOP, for minimal contact games such as football, hockey, cricket etc. the teams have been permitted to assemble only for practice while following the SOP.

On the other hand, for full contact games such as wrestling, karate, boxing etc. the government has allowed trainers to come close to the players for practice. Moreover, for team sports, it has allowed only 10-15 players to assemble for practice at one point of time.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, December 17, Maharashtra recorded a fall in daily COVID-19 cases with 3,880 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus. This propelled the state's COVID-19 tally to 18,84,773. Currently, there are 60,905 active cases in the state. With 4,358 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 17,74,255.

With the outbreak of the coronavirus, a total of 48,499 persons in the state have died owing to the contagious disease. While 5,06,914 persons are under home quarantine, 4,033 others have been admitted to institutional quarantine centres. The COVID-19 recovery rate and fatality rate in the state stand at 94.14 per cent, and 2.57 per cent respectively.
