Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced on Monday, July 28, that the state government will soon launch its own app-based transport service. This service will include e-bikes, taxis, and autorickshaws. The goal is to create job opportunities for local youth.
The state’s new service will compete with private companies such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido, which currently dominate the market. Sarnaik said the state transport department is developing the service to offer an alternative to these platforms.
The proposal has been approved in principle by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. Final approval from the state Cabinet is expected soon.
According to Sarnaik, who also chairs the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), the app platform is almost ready. The government is considering names for the app. Options include Jai Maharashtra, Maha-Ride, Maha-Yatri, and Maha-Go.
He said the government already has the manpower, infrastructure, and technical skills needed for the project. If the plan is carried out properly, it can benefit both drivers and passengers.
The app is being developed in collaboration with private stakeholders and organisations such as the Maharashtra Institute for Transport Technology and the Maharashtra Institution for Transformation (MITRA).
The platform will follow all rules under the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2020, issued by the Central Government. These rules focus on safety, accountability, and fare regulation for digital transport aggregators.
Officials from the transport department said the state wants to end the monopoly of existing players and bring transparency to fares and driver benefits.
