The Thane City Police Commissionerate is set to install a CCTV system, as sanctioned by the state government. The project will cost a total of INR 492 crore. It is a significant step towards enhancing the city's security.

The roots of this decision trace back to a Cabinet meeting held on July 24, 2011. Following a terror attack in Mumbai, the Cabinet decided to fast-track decisions regarding CCTV installations in Mumbai and other parts of the state. A committee, led by the chief secretary, was formed to oversee the implementation of these security measures.

Then, the installation of a CCTV system was chosen for Thane. Thane, given its priority status by the Home Department, is one of the cities selected for this project.

On October 29, 2021, a project report was filed with the government by the police director general. The report proposed the installation of 5,468 CCTV cameras at 1,745 different locations across five zones in Thane City.

The proposal was forwarded to the Information Technology Department for technical approval. The department approved the "CCTV Project Report of Thane Police Commissionerate" in July of the same year.

In a committee meeting held on October 9, 2023, the Thane Police Commissionerate presented a proposal to install 6,051 CCTV cameras at a cost of INR 492.89 crore. The state government has since given its approval for the project.
