In the backdrop of the coal supply crisis for generation of power, 13 units of state-owned as well as private power generation thermal plants have stopped, causing a deficit of 3,330MW, reported the Hindustan Times. It is anticipated that this deficit may influence the supply and force the authorities to undertake load shedding in peak hours in the course of the next few days until the supply stabilizes.

The scarcity of coal supply has inhibited six thermal power generation plants that supply power to the state, compelling the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) to reduce the supply to agricultural pumps. In light of this, the state has urged the citizens to use electricity adequately in peak hours.

Three units of the Mahageneco at Chandrapur, Bhuswawa, and Nashik have a capacity of 210MW each, Paras has a capacity of 250MW, in addition to this, Bhusawal and Chandrapur have a unit with 500MW capacity which is shut. Apart from this, four units of 640MW Postal Gujarat Power Limited and three units of 810 MW Ratan India Power Limited are shut due to issues in the supply of coal.

Principal Secretary, Energy Department, Dinesh Waghmare stated, according to the report that the power plants owned by the state have coal stocks that will only last a few days. He added that they have been meeting the demand by buying power from the open market, but when the demand rises, they will choose load shedding. However, they are expecting the coal supply to stabilize in the next couple of days. He further elaborated that their thermal power generation plants make 60% of the 6,000MW power they make and the demand in October during peak hours climbs to 22,000 wherein they may opt for shedding.
