Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed authorities to take stringent action against those involved in adulterating milk, paneer, dairy products and other food items. Officials have been asked to examine the possibility of invoking the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against organised food adulteration networks.
Shinde issued the directions during a review meeting on the functioning of the Food and Drug Administration in Mumbai. He said food adulteration poses a serious threat to public health, particularly the health of children.
The Deputy Chief Minister also directed officials to register non-bailable cases against serious offenders wherever legally applicable. He stressed that cases should be investigated and prosecuted effectively so that those involved in organised adulteration do not escape punishment.
Shinde further called for the formation of a specialised legal team comprising experienced legal experts to strengthen cases in court. The team will help ensure that investigations and prosecutions do not suffer from legal shortcomings.
The government has previously announced strict measures against milk adulteration and the sale of fake paneer and other adulterated food products. The latest directions signal a tougher approach towards organised food adulteration in Maharashtra.
