Amid a spurt in the coronavirus cases, the state home minister Anil Deshmukh have instructed to celebrate the festival of Mahashivratri, which falls on March 11 this year, in a simple way.

He also said that the annual events will not be held this year. The decision to cancel the yatra was taken as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of corona infection, he added.

Lord Shiva is one of India’s most worshipped deities and has many temples dedicated to him.

Meanwhile, it has come across that like every year, Madhya Pradesh is gearing up for a major congregation at Pachmarhi next door at the 10-day Mahashivratri fair from March 2 to 12.

The event is expected to attract lakhs of pilgrims, with a majority of them coming from Nagpur and other nearby areas. The event had been called off last year as the pandemic had begun by that time.

Besides, there are many temples dedicated to him and among these temples are the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva which is the most auspicious pilgrim destination for Shiva devotees.

The annual Mahashivratri fair at Shri Kshetra Verul in Maharastra’s Khultabad taluka, one of the 12 'Jyotirlingas' in the country, has been cancelled this year due to rising COVID-19 cases.

On Tuesday, March 9, a decision to this effect was taken in a meeting held at Shri Kshetra Mandir, also known as Ghrishneshwar. This came just days after another such celebration held annually at Parali-Vaijnath temple in Beed district was cancelled.

Khultabad tehsildar (revenue officer) Surendra Deshmukh said that the state government has issued some guidelines for Mahashivratri celebrations and the district will take all the COVID-related norms into consideration while celebrating the festival.
