Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s “Deep Clean Mumbai” campaign is coming to city's P North ward, comprising areas of Malad. Under this, beautification and repair projects worth over INR 2 crore have been approved ahead of Maharashtra’s local body elections scheduled early next year.

Over the weekend, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) released at least 15 tenders for cosmetic upgrades under this initiative. The approved works include repainting roads, fixing walkways, giving minor facelifts to public areas and placing new signboards in busy parts of the western suburbs.

However, residents have raised questions about the need for such spending. However, as per a report by Mid-day, P North assistant municipal commissioner Kundan Valvi said the work comes from funds allocated for Mumbai’s “Deep Cleaning Drive”.

As per reports, similar activities are being carried out in many other wards and not only in Malad. Painting dividers, repairing footpaths, and putting up directional boards are part of the deep cleaning plan. Larger road projects are handled separately by the BMC’s central Roads Department.

The planned improvements include repainting zebra crossings, medians, and traffic islands. Thermoplastic paint markings will be added. Walkways will be repaired. Direction boards and signboards will be installed. Tree guards will also be put up in public spaces.

Important routes such as Marve Road, Link Road in Malad, and the SV Road corridor that connects the western suburbs with South Mumbai will be the main focus. It also includes repairing a collapsable gate on Link Road and fixing barriers on Marve Road and SV Road.

The “Deep Clean Mumbai” campaign began in December 2023. It was launched by Eknath Shinde to improve long-term cleanliness in the city. The drive started in Mumbai and later expanded across Maharashtra. The goal was to clean streets and improve air quality after festive seasons by removing encroachments, garbage, and construction debris.
