According to the latest reports, the Maharashtra legislative assembly approved a law that makes it compulsory for all shops and establishments to have Marathi written in the Devanagari script on their signboards.

It has been reported that the font size of the lettering in Marathi-Devanagari must not be smaller than the font size of any other language’s letters that are being utilized on the signage.

On Wednesday, March 9, the bill to amend the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2017, was approved by the assembly.

The Act now mandates even those shops employing under 10 works to have signage in Marathi. They can, however, have any other language as well as scripts on their name boards. The Act expects them to have lettered Marathi at the beginning of the name board.

Additionally, the font size should not be smaller than that of the other language. The law also states that no establishment where liquor is served or sold have their name boards in the name of legends, forts or icons.

Subhash Desai, Minister for the Marathi language was quoted in accounts elaborating on how boards shops, establishments and offices should be in Marathi. He added that while other languages in English can be utilized on the board, Marathi should get a similar space. He added that the loopholes present earlier have been addressed.
