Meter-based fares for auto rickshaws and taxis in Vasai–Virar has come into effect from November 15. The Regional Transport Office has announced revised fares for metered rickshaws, with the minimum fare starting at INR 26.
On October 13, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik had stated that taxi and rickshaw drivers in Vasai and Virar were given time until November 15 to switch to meter-based services. The meeting focused on addressing traffic congestion in the Vasai–Virar Municipal Corporation area. According to the minister, drivers must charge passengers strictly as per the fare structure fixed by the state government.
For a distance of 1.5 km, the regular fare will be INR 26, while the midnight fare will be INR 32. For 2 km, the meter-based fare will be INR 34, and the midnight fare will be INR 43.
The decision to introduce meter-based fares in Vasai–Virar was taken during a meeting held at Mantralaya in the presence of MLA Sneha Dube, MSRTC Managing Director Dr. Madhav Kusekar, Vasai–Virar Municipal Commissioner Manoj Suryavanshi, Additional Transport Commissioner Bharat Kalsekar, and other officials.
During the meeting, the Transport Minister also directed the state transport corporation to start long-distance bus services from the Vasai–Virar municipal area to Thane and Kalyan.
