FDA tests milk samples for quality and adulteration; reports show poor quality

In a piece of important news shared for Mumbaikars, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in an investigation conducted recently, has found that milk supplied in Mumbai from other cities and districts is not free from adulteration and is of low quality.

As per reports, more than 3,500 litres of low-quality milk has been sent back by the administration and samples have also been taken for testing. Officials conducted a milk inspection campaign in Mumbai on Thursday and Friday, January 21 and 22, 2021, whereby over 6.63 lakh litres of milk was tested from 170 milk vehicles reaching areas like Dahisar, Mankhurd, Airoli, Mulund Cheknaka East, Mulund Check Naka, LBS and others. Of these, 254 milk samples were tested and seven samples were found to contain low quality milk.

Besides this, five samples at Mulund Check Naka East and two samples at Mankhurd were found to be of poor quality. Furthermore, 1,432 and 2,200 litres of milk from the respective locations were sent back, and a total of 3632 litres of milk worth over 1.7 lakh has been sent back from the city keeping the quality in mind.

Reports from the test proved that no harmful substances were found in any milk. Water is often adulterated in slums after milk arrives in the city. Upon finding the same, officials have decided to take strict action as per law, whereby report of seven samples showing low-quality milk will be referred.

Officials have also decided to conduct an inspection every two to three months.
