Days after Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) hiked water tax charges by 23 per cent, the civic body proposed to increase in public transport bus fares.

The Public Transport Committee has submitted a proposal to Municipal Commissioner Dilip Dhole seeking to revise the fare structure in the range of INR 6 to INR 16 due to the steep rise in fuel prices, spare parts and manpower.

However, the Commissioner reduced it to ₹2 to ₹12 and sent the proposal for approval from the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), which is required before implementing any kind of revision in the existing fare structure.

It is pertinent to note that there has been no change in rent for the past 10 years.

In addition to this, the administration has also considered reducing the fare of air-conditioned (AC) buses between ₹2 to ₹11.

The administration has a total of 74 buses including - 59 regular, 5 AC Volvo buses and 10 midi buses.

Currently, 71 out of 74 buses are plying on 19 routes in and out of the twin cities. The average daily ridership of MBMT buses has already crossed the 80,000 mark.

MBMC will soon add 57 electric buses to its existing fleet, which will be operated by a private operator on a gross cost contract (GCC) system which is a wet-lease model.
