The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has joined hands with the Centre for Education, Governance, and Policy (CEGP) Foundation, based in Pune to set up an innovation cell (IC). This move aims to cultivate an environment of innovation for the development of the twin city.

Sanjay Katkar, the municipal commissioner of MBMC, played an important role in this. As the local body's administrator, he issued a resolution for the plan to set up an IC. After this, bids were invited, and the CEGP Foundation was chosen for the task.

The CEGP team comprises 17 members. It includes a project manager, an environment consultant, field engineers, and specialists in various fields. These fields include traffic, town planning, management information systems (MIS), solid waste management, monitoring, and assessment. The cell would explore new ideas. It will assist the civic body in formulating action plans to enhance facilities in the twin city. The cell will also conduct field trips to monitor various ongoing projects.

The cell began operations on April 1, with Aniket Manorkar as its nodal officer. An additional civic chief will lead the cell. The cell's primary focus will be on various aspects and sub-points within the job scopes of numerous civic departments. These include solid waste management, the public works department (PWD), CCTV cameras, and the anti-encroachment wing.

Field engineers are required to take geotagged photos during site visits. They must submit their reports electronically every day. The cell will regularly propose innovative solutions for issues like scientific trash disposal, water and power conservation policies, promoting a clean environment, and ways to increase the civic body's revenue. The most creative ideas will be selected to formulate innovative action plans.

MBMC has recently introduced several innovative plans. To prevent the supply of contaminated water, it linked tankers to Global Positioning System (GPS) devices. MBMC also collaborated with an organisation to implement the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. This year, it aims to save crores on the maintenance and repair of its pumping stations and sewage treatment plants (STP). Furthermore, MBMC has improved the process of digitally mapping every road and underground utility line in the twin cities.
