The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) bagged the ‘Tunnelling project of the year’ and 'Safety initiative of the year’ awards conferred by the prestigious Tunnelling Association of India at Tunnelling and Underground Space Awards 2023. 


This is the 9th Edition of the ITA Tunnelling Awards 2023. Tunnelling Asia’ 2023, is the biennial international conference organised by Tunnelling Association of India (TAI) under the aegis of International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA). Since 2015, ITA Tunnelling and Underground Space Awards has been recognizing most ground-breaking innovations and outstanding projects in tunnelling and underground construction.   


"It is an honour to receive an award in the Tunnelling Project of The Year category. The project has been an engineering marvel due to its alignment passing through the most difficult and congested areas. There have been several challenges in the project like traffic management, rehabilitation of PAPs, logistic management which has been successfully surmounted with help of use of advanced technology and engineering acumen", said Ashwini Bhide, Managing Director, MMRC.

"Ensuring safety and structural integrity of buildings and its occupants, safety of city dwellers and construction workers have been an important feature of the project, where 250 million manhours with loss time injury frequency rate of 0.34 was achieved over a period spanning more than 7 years and average manpower of 15,000 manpower directly deployed at sites. This is well below the international standard of 0.5 for mega projects." said S.K. Gupta, Director (Projects), MMRC. 


The Awards were received by Ashwini Bhide, Managing Director, MMRC and S.K. Gupta, Director (Projects) along with other senior officials of MMRC.
