Mumbai and some major suburbs receive water from the Bhandup water treatment plant, however, an illegal borewell in Thane has damaged the water tunnel, leading to unfiltered water being supplied to households. Around 30 to 35 buildings in Colaba are also affected by the situation.

Residents in both the areas are forced to use bottled water as an alternative, and those without RO water purifiers are being forced to purchase drinking water. Despite residents reaching out to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) through social media and in person, they have only received responses stating that "we will look into it."

The repair of the 5500mm tunnel is expected to take a month, and the delay in repair is due to the need to isolate the deep tunnel first. A contractor is yet to be appointed to carry out the repair work. The BMC is monitoring the water quality, and it is gradually improving.

The affected areas in Mulund West include Veena Nagar, Swapna Nagari, Vaishali Nagar, Yogi Hills and Tambe Nagar Check Naka, while Kisan Nagar in Thane city is also facing the consequences of the water crisis.
