Mumbai's active cases cross 50,000-mark

The number of daily new infections in the city is showing a downward as against last week. On Sunday, Mumbai reported 6,923 new coronavirus infections in 24 hours, the highest daily count since the outbreak of the pandemic.

After witnessing a slight dip in the daily cases, Mumbai once again recorded more than 5,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day.

With 5,394 persons testing positive for the infection on Wednesday, March 31, the total caseload of the city now stands at 4,14,714, which includes 3.5 lakh recoveries and 51,411 active cases.

A total of 11,686 persons have succumbed to the virus to date and 15 of these patients succumbed to the COVID-19 infection on March 31. The toll in the megapolis mounted to 11,686, a civic official said, adding that the city has witnessed 86 casualties since March 23.

As per a report prepared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the doubling rate of cases in the city has worsened from 90 days recorded a week ago to the current 49 days. Currently, there are 72 active containment areas in the city, while 616 building has been sealed. The civic body is sealing residential societies with five or more cases.

Meanwhile, the recovery rate in the city has also declined dramatically to 85 per cent that used to be over 94 per cent in mid-February. According to the health ministry data, Mumbai is among the top five districts with the highest active COVID-19 cases in the state.

 Moreover, a night curfew has been imposed across Maharashtra in order to curb the spread of the virus.
