The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun the process of dividing K East ward, which includes Vile Parle (East), Andheri (East), Jogeshwari (East), and Marol.

This follows the recent division of P North ward, Malad, which was one of the largest wards in mumbai. The final decision on the division of L ward, which includes Kurla, Saki Naka, Chunabhatti, and Chandivli, is still pending.

K East, P North, and L ward are the largest wards in Mumbai, both in terms of population and area. The large geographic area and population have made it challenging to provide municipal facilities. There have been challenges in providing water supply, sanitation, and citizen services.

The division of these wards has been a long-standing demand of the residents and former corporators. After a six-year wait, P North ward was divided into P East and P West in October 2023. The administration approved the division of K East ward last year.

Post-division, seven of the current fifteen corporators will be in K South, while the remaining eight will be in K North. The new ward office for K North will be temporarily set up in a BMC market building in Poonam Nagar, Jogeshwari. The current K East administration facility will be used for both wards.

K East Ward has a population of around 8.2 lakh people and spans an area of 16.8 square kilometres. L ward is home to about 9 lakh people and covers an area of 15.6 square kilometres.

The division of L ward into nine in L North wards and seven within L South wards has been proposed. A panel has suggested a reorganisation plan that involves eliminating some corporator wards and merging them with another ward. This approach will save resources while building new facilities and infrastructure.
