Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has ranked last among India's ten busiest airports in terms of on-time performance (OTP), according to the latest data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The report showed that Mumbai Airport recorded an OTP of 70.5% in May, the lowest among the country's major airports. In contrast, Chennai Airport emerged as the best performer with an OTP of 92.2%, followed by Kolkata (84.7%), Hyderabad (84.4%), Bengaluru (82.3%), and Kochi (81.5%). Delhi Airport ranked ninth with 72.6%.
On-time performance is calculated based on the percentage of flights departing within 15 minutes of their scheduled departure time. Mumbai's lower ranking has been attributed to factors such as runway limitations, high aircraft movement, air traffic congestion and operational challenges, particularly during the monsoon.
Despite being one of India's busiest aviation hubs, Mumbai Airport has consistently recorded lower punctuality compared to other major airports in recent DGCA reports. Aviation experts say improvements in air traffic management and infrastructure will be key to enhancing flight punctuality in the future.
