Maharashtra Medical Admissions: State Quota Seats to Fall by 235 After Three Colleges Gain Private University Status

Medical admissions in Maharashtra are set to become more competitive after three medical and dental colleges were granted private university status. The move is expected to reduce the number of seats available to Maharashtra students by around 235.

The institutions are Dr Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil Foundation Medical College in Ahilyanagar, N.K.P. Salve Institute of Medical Sciences in Nagpur, and Ranjit Deshmukh Dental College and Research Centre in Nagpur. Under the new system, only 40% of the total seats at these institutions will be available to Maharashtra students, while the remaining seats will be open to students from outside the state.

The three colleges together offer 400 MBBS seats and 100 BDS seats. Previously, a larger share of these seats was available through the regular state admission process. The decision has raised concerns among students and parents, who fear that the reduction in state-quota seats could intensify competition for medical seats in Maharashtra.

Student organisations have also expressed concerns over fees, as the colleges' private university status could affect the availability of government fee-reimbursement and scholarship benefits. Officials said the colleges will continue to admit students through the designated state or national admission authorities.
