Mumbai: BMC issues notice to 28 construction sites for violating air pollution control rules

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration has issued notices to 28 constructions that are not implementing the guidelines prepared by the BMC for pollution control in Mumbai. The BMC administration has also warned of strict action such as issuing a stop work notice or sealing the work place if the rules are not complied with.


The level of atmosphere in Mumbai is deteriorating and air pollution has also increased. The civic body administration has taken strict steps to control air pollution and especially dust. According to the directives of BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani, war level measures have been taken in all the 24 administrative departments of the Municipal Corporation. The teams have started visiting all the 24 administrative divisions to check whether the guidelines issued by the BMC for controlling air pollution are being implemented in the Mumbai metropolis. Since Wednesday, the municipal team has visited 868 construction sites. Written instructions have been given to a total of 28 constructions that do not follow the rules.

Air pollution in Mumbai is mainly caused by construction. Therefore, the civic body had announced the guidelines about the rules to be followed at the construction site only last year. The municipal corporation has issued guidelines as all concerned parties must also make efforts to control air pollution in Mumbai. Teams have been appointed in all the 24 administrative divisions to monitor the compliance of these rules. These teams are visiting the concerned area and inspecting the work place. Also, written instructions are being given to follow the guidelines at the workplace within the given time frame.


The BMC team visited 868 construction project sites in Mumbai in one day. Written notices have been issued to 28 construction projects that do not follow the guidelines. The schedule for visiting the rest of the construction project sites has also been fixed. Also, other relevant departments of the Municipal Corporation are also giving written instructions to the construction projects through online systems like 'Auto DCR', informed the municipal administration.
