Mumbai Weather Update: Lower Temp Trend Continues In City; AQI slips to ‘poor’

With Mumbai recording 15 degrees Celsius on Monday morning, January 16, the lower temperature trend continues in the city.

However, there has been a slight spike compared to a day earlier, on Sunday, January 15, which recorded lowest temperature of this season so far with the mercury levels dropping to 13.8 degrees Celsius.

The chill in the air is attributed to the north-easterly winds prevailing over the city.

On Monday, January 16, the minimum temperature recorded by the Santacruz observatory was 13.8°C, and it was 16.2°C in Colaba. The maximum temperatures witnessed were 26.2°C and 26.4°C, respectively.

On Sunday, January 15, the minimum temperature recorded by the Santacruz observatory was 15.4°C, and it was 18.2°C in Colaba. The maximum temperatures witnessed were 27.4°C and 26.4°C, respectively.

Meanwhile, the second lowest minimum temperature recorded this season was 15°C on December 25.

Besides, it is pertinent to note that the with the decline in temperature, the Air-Quality Index (AQI) of Mumbai too deteriorated, as the city recorded AQI worse than Delhi.

Mumbai’s overall AQI in the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecast and Research (SAFAR) dashboard showed 290, slipping to ‘poor’ category on Sunday and Monday.

Besides this, several pockets of Mumbai continued to record even poorer AQI.

Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) recorded the worst AQI at 354, followed by 331 in Chembur and 307 in Andheri. Colaba recorded AQI of 286, followed by 235 in Mazagaon, 180 in Bhandup and 152 in Malad. Both, Borivali and Worli recorded AQI of 111, and Navi Mumbai’s readings showed 353.

Experts exclaimed that Mumbai’s AQI will again improve following a reversal of winds after two weeks. This pattern would continue till end of winter.
