According to the latest reports, the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), after more than five years is on a monumental recruitment drive. The MFB has issued a recruitment notice for 900 new firefighters. In accordance with accounts, the candidate should have cleared grade 12 to be eligible for the post. 

Based on accounts, those eligible will have to go through a comprehensive selection process that will entail a written examination. Post this, those that clear the examinations will have to go through a field test. This is reported to include a heavy vehicle driving test as well as a final medical test. 

Interestingly, 30 per cent of the post have been reserved for women. It has been reported that those selected will have to undergo six months of training prior to their final recruitment. 

Presently, there are more than 2,500 officers and firefighters in the MFB. Their responsibilities include regular fire-fighting duties, undertaking fire audits in private buildings, hospitals and malls, amongst others, claimed accounts. Currently, there are 35 fire stations and 18 mini fire stations in the six fire command centres. 

Apart from this, there are over 258 fire vehicles that include fire engines, jumbo water tankers and ladder vans. Right now, the MFB pumps can take up water up to 70 meters and has a ladder that is 90 meters that can reach 30 floors. One that can reach 90 meters is with the Byculla unit and another, which can reach up to 81 meters, is in Borivali.
