Mumbai among the 10 most congested cities in the world

According to reports, Bengaluru and Delhi made it to the list of top 10 most congested cities in the world in the year 2020.

According to the location technology specialist TomTom’s traffic index 2021 report published on Wednesday, January 13, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi made it to the list of top 10 most congested cities in the world.

Moreover, out of the 416 cities (57 countries) included in the Index, 387 saw a significant decrease (average of 21 per cent) in congestion, and 28 per cent average decrease in congestion during rush hours, bucking a trend that has seen congestion increase by an average of 2-3 per cent year-on-year.

Meanwhile, the top three most congested cities on the list are Moscow, Russia (54 per cent), Mumbai, India (53 per cent) and Bogota, Colombia (53 per cent). Bengaluru (51 per cent) and at Delhi (47 per cent).

Back in the January 2020 report, the traffic index stated that the people of Mumbai, while driving during peak hours, spent an extra eight days and 17 hours in traffic every year. Moreover, the city saw its heaviest congestion (101 per cent) on September 9, 2019, while the lowest congestion (19 per cent) was recorded on March 21, 2019. The index looked at 416 cities across 57 countries. In addition to Mumbai and Bengaluru, Pune and Delhi also featured in the top 10 congested cities in the world in the fifth and eight positions.

On the other hand, as per the Indian government population census of 2011, Mumbai was the most populous city in the country with an estimated city-proper population of 12.5 million living under Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.
