The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed to demolish and rebuild 10 bridges across Mumbai to avert any untoward accidents. The development comes as the civic body had ordered a structural audit of about 300 bridges across the city following the foot overbridge (FOB) collapse at CSMT.

The audit reported 29 bridges to be “extremely dangerous” and suggested immediate demolition. Accordingly, BMC has last week floated tenders for demolition and rebuilding of the 10 bridges over the next three to six months and had decided to spend ₹125 crore.

The bridges consist of Pipeline bridge in Hans Bhugara Marg at Santa Cruz East, the bridge across Juhu-Tara Road near SNDT nullah, the bridge at Gandhi Nagar, Kurar Village, the bridge across Oshiwara river, Jogeshwari west, and bridge near Laxmi Baug nullah near Ghatkopar BEST depot.

Meanwhile, the civic body is ready to demolish and reconstruct the 10 bridges on urgent basis and will work in monsoon too to minimalise traffic jams.

After the audit suggested demolition of 29 bridges, BMC began started shutting them. The municipal corporation has shut down 20 bridges so far which has caused traffic congestion in the city leading to criticism from motorists and activists for its poor planning.

In the meantime, the municipal corporation has finalised the contractor for repair and reconstruction of six bridges in the eastern suburbs. BMC is expected to spend ₹7.79 crore for the bridges and the proposal for the same will be tabled before the Standing Committee meeting on July 24, Wednesday.
