P-North, the densely populated and largest ward in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) jurisdiction, has finally split into two.

After a long wait of six years, the new P-East ward office, located in a building near Kundanlal Sehgal Theater at Ram Leela Maidan in Malad East, will be opened to the public this week.

At present, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of P-North Ward, Kiran Dighavkar will also have the responsibility of the new ward. P-North ward is divided into Malad (East) and Malad (West) areas, which have 18 civic wards. Malad is considered one of the most densely populated areas of Mumbai. For the last several years, there was a strong demand to build two BMC offices in this area.

Local residents and representatives put forward a demand to divide the ward in 2017. Sanjay Gandhi National Park occupies the eastern part of the ward and extends to the Arabian Sea towards the west. Appa Pada and Kranti Nagar areas are towards the north of the ward and Chincholi Bandar area is at the southern end of the ward. The population of the ward is 9.43 lakh and its area is 46.67 square metres.

The civic authority announced bifurcation of the ward in 2021-22 and the proposal was approved in January 2022 with a provision of INR 5 crore for the construction of a new office building.
