An individual fell into an open manhole near Sanman Hotel on Khairani Road in Sakinaka while talking on a mobile phone during heavy rainfall. Authorities have launched a rescue operation.

The manhole had been left open due to ongoing maintenance work being carried out by a private contractor. During the search, rescuers recovered the person's umbrella and footwear. Owing to the strong flow of rainwater, officials fear the individual may have been swept away.

The person has been identified as Aslam Shaikh, approximately 60 years old. A joint search and rescue operation is being carried out by the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), the police, the 108 ambulance service, and other concerned civic departments.

Heavy rainfall has caused widespread disruption across Maharashtra, with several rain-related incidents reported in Mumbai. Just two days ago, a school student in Chembur lost their life after a tree collapsed onto a school bus.

Last week, on the very first day of the monsoon rains in Mumbai, a municipal corporation official also fell into an open manhole, highlighting ongoing concerns over public safety during the rainy season.
