What's the story?

Mumbai cops are all set to embrace a change in look as the vintage blue Gandhi-topi will be replaced by a new, stylish, modern-age baseball-esque cap.

Who designed the caps?

The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) approached the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmadabad, in an effort to revamp the look and public impression of the Mumbai Police.

New caps more useful than the old ones

On Tuesday, October 3, the caps were distributed to the police officials and by the looks of it, these new caps will be more useful to them that the old Gandhi-topi.

A pilot was run earlier to test a few samples in the Local Arms branch in South Mumbai around two months ago. This new cap not only makes the cops look better, but they’re genuinely more useful under the scorching sun.

There were complaints from the department about the fact that the Gandhi topis were difficult to handle as they would easily slip-off from the head.

Commissioner of Police on the change

According to Dattatray Padsalgikar, Commissioner of Police, the cap was introduced for the convenience of the constabulary. Many times, cops couldn't use the older cap on the bike and female staffers also found it a bit uncomfortable. The new cap will give them comfort and convenience. But, it will not replace the old cap, the new cap is optional.
