The Mumbai Police has introduced colour-coded stickers for vehicles in the city to limit vehicular traffic on Mumbai roads and to allow vehicles related to essential services to travel with more ease amid COVID-19 restrictions.

This decision comes as traffic snarls at entry and exit points of Mumbai city and is seen during peak hours despite having imposed 'lockdown like restrictions.

A day after the Mumbai Police made it mandatory for vehicles engaged in emergency and essential services to have colour code stickers, Commissioner of Police (CP) Hemant Nagrale visited the main entry points of the city at Dahisar and Mulund toll plazas and distributed stickers to motorists.

Citizens from Thane and Navi Mumbai, who travel to Mumbai, are confused as no such rule has been implemented in their cities.

Here is everything you should know about the stickers before stepping out:

- There are three colour-coded stickers -- red, green and yellow

- A ‘red sticker’ will be used for vehicles belonging to doctors, medical staff, and transportation of essential medical supplies.

- ‘Green stickers’ are for vehicles carrying consumable items (fruits, vegetables, dairy products etc.).

- ‘Yellow sticker’ belongs to essential services including the movement of officials from the government, telephone department, electricity department and the media.

- The stickers are not to be issued like the e-passes for travelling, it can be easily made at home at no cost at all.

- The stickers, which should be six-inch circles, will also be made available at 'nakabandi' points and toll nakas for free for those unable to make it at home.

- If anyone is found violating the rule, they will be booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for disobedience of orders promulgated by a public servant.

- Moreover, a WhatsApp message has been circulated soon after the order, which states that fuel will be provided only to those cars that have the red-green or yellow stickers. Mumbai Police has clarified and said that no such instruction has been given to the petrol pump owners.
