Mumbai Police issued 10,051 e-challans on Saturday, August 16, during the Dahi Handi celebrations, collecting penalties worth INR 1.13 crore. Officials said the action was taken to control traffic during the large gatherings for the festival.
To keep the roads safe, police deployed extra personnel across the city. Traffic police also used CCTV surveillance to detect violations. As per reports, e-challans are still being issued after checking camera footage from important junctions and roads.
People were seen travelling in groups on two-wheelers and other vehicles to attend the festivities. The most common violations were driving on the wrong side, riding without helmets, triple riding on two-wheelers, and speeding.
In Mumbai, 318 people were reported injured, including a nine-year-old boy. Only 24 of them were admitted to hospitals, while others were discharged after treatment. The island city recorded 135 injuries, followed by 111 in the western suburbs and 72 in the eastern suburbs.
The celebrations also led to several injuries and deaths. According to civic officials, at least two people lost their lives and more than 300 were injured in Mumbai and nearby Thane while forming human pyramids.
In Thane, 22 participants were injured while attempting pyramids. As per reports, 17 of them were admitted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa. They suffered injuries to their heads, shoulders, waists, and chests.
Police and civic officials said monitoring and enforcement will remain strict to prevent further accidents during such celebrations. They appealed to the public to have helmets, keep speed limits in mind and not to drive on the wrong side of the road.
