An internal review of the Mumbai Police payroll has revealed that salaries amounting to nearly INR 6.4 crore were paid over several years to 10 "ghost" employees, individuals who were either non-existent, had retired, died, or were otherwise ineligible to receive salaries.
The irregularities came to light during a verification of payroll records, which uncovered discrepancies in employee details and salary disbursements. The findings have raised serious concerns over the functioning of the force's payroll and financial monitoring systems.
According to officials, the fraudulent payments continued for an extended period due to lapses in record verification and inadequate oversight. The review found that salary payments were processed despite the absence of valid service records or updated employment status.
Following the discovery, the Mumbai Police have initiated an internal inquiry to determine how the payments were authorised and to identify those responsible for the irregularities. Authorities are also examining whether the payments were the result of administrative negligence or a larger fraud.
Officials said steps are being taken to strengthen payroll verification, improve auditing mechanisms, and prevent similar incidents in the future. Efforts are also underway to recover the wrongly disbursed funds and initiate disciplinary or legal action against those found responsible.
