The Thane Municipal Corporation's (TMC) tree health assessment and census has sparked controversy, with environmental activists raising concerns over the project's INR 2.35-crore cost and the transparency of the inspection process.
The civic body has undertaken the survey to evaluate the health of trees across the city, identify those that pose a risk, and prepare a comprehensive scientific database for better tree management and conservation.
However, activists have questioned the methodology being used to assess tree health and have sought details about the technical parameters followed during the survey. They have also expressed concern over the expenditure involved, arguing that the project cost appears excessive.
In response, the TMC has maintained that the survey includes scientific evaluation, geo-tagging, digital documentation, and detailed health assessments of trees. According to the civic body, the exercise is intended to improve urban tree conservation and help prevent accidents caused by weak or diseased trees, particularly during the monsoon.
The project has reignited debate over civic spending on environmental initiatives, with activists demanding greater transparency by making the survey methodology and findings available to the public.
