In a special drive conducted by the Mumbai Traffic department on New Year’s Eve, over 1,000 individuals were penalised for driving under the influence of alcohol on New Year’s Eve in Mumbai, Thane, Mira-Bhayandar-Vasai-Virar, and Navi Mumbai.
The drive was conducted from 8:00 pm on December 31, 2024, until the morning of January 1, 2025 with over 15,000 policemen deployed on the ground.
During this period, checkpoints were set up at 107 locations across the city, and a total of 46,143 vehicles were inspected.
As per reports, the traffic department noted a significant rise in the violations in 2024 compared to 2023.
The traffic police registered 17,800 cases of traffic violations through e-challans for endangering their lives and the lives of others. A total fine of ₹89,19,750 was collected.
Meanwhile on December 31, 2023, there were 333 cases of drunk driving reported.
Action was taken against 5,670 motorists under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act while their counterparts in the traffic department took action against 17,647 individuals for flouting various traffic norms.
Additionally, 333 cases of drunk driving were registered, with strict action taken against the offenders under the "Drunk and Drive" provisions. They were found drunk beyond the permissible limit of 30 mg alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
In other offences, 2,893 were booked for obstructing traffic/ parking haphazardly; 1,976 for refusing to ply (taxis and autos); 1,923 for riding without helmets; 1,731 for jumping signals; 868 for violating no entry; 842 for speeding; 440 for breaching the stop line; 123 for triple-riding; 109 for using mobile phone while driving; 80 for rash driving; 40 for wrong-side driving; and 20 for unnecessary honking.
Under the guidance of the Commissioner of Police, the Special Commissioner of Police, and the Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), the Mumbai Police organised a special drive to take action against motorists violating traffic rules within its jurisdiction.
The police said that in order to prevent untoward incidents in the city, strong security measures were in place, and traffic violators were penalised during checks. FIRs have been registered against them at local police stations and appropriate action was taken.
In Navi Mumbai, police officials said that during the nakabandi, they took action against 2,357 motorists under the Motor Vehicles Act for violating various traffic norms. Additionally, nine people were booked under the Narcotic Drugs Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) for consumption of drugs while another 33 were booked under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 for consuming alcohol in public places).
In Thane, the police said that 369 people were found driving under the influence of alcohol. Besides, in Mira-Bhayandar-Vasai-Virar, action was taken against 61 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol.
