The Mumbai Traffic Police have approved significant construction work of roads, Metro, flyover, bridges on the Western Express Highway (WEH).

It has also given a nod to road repairs works, which are being undertaken by the authoritative bodies such as Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and MMRDA.

This will further deteriorate the congestion issue on the WEH ahead of the monsoon.

According to traffic officials, they received several letters from the authorities (BMC, MMRDA) at one go for conducting work on roads.

“They wanted us (traffic) to manage the traffic movements during the hours they conduct work, and also look for diversions. Only then can we issue them the No-Objection Certificate (NOC). However, since the priority is to finish work before monsoon, we had to give them a go-ahead,” a senior traffic official told reporters.

In certain areas such as Bandra, the BMC is also involved in the construction of storm-water drains.

Construction activities along the Western Express Highway (WEH) from Dahisar to Santacruz are currently underway, directly affecting the flow of traffic in the area. Simultaneously, the BMC is carrying out road repairs at specific locations along the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, causing further traffic congestion.

Additionally, construction work is being conducted at the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR), as stated by traffic police officials.

Owing to this, Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) have also deployed maximum manpower including traffic police and wardens to manage the flow of traffic at major check points.

Major diversions have also been given to avoid congestion, but diversion from Dudhsagar Road (in Goregaon) to Oberoi Mall Road will have a bad impact on traffic during peak hours or peak hours.

“We have asked the agencies to provide us manpower who will be made traffic wardens. These traffic wardens will be temporarily posted at junctions and signals where specific work affects traffic,” official added.
