Amid the ongoing repair works of pipeline, it has come to light that the Mumbaikars in the suburban areas are facing water crisis.

Though, a water cut of 15 per cent was announced by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the residents of several locations claimed that they are receiving water way below the mandated cut.

If reports are to be believed, citizens in pockets of Jogeshwari and Goregaon, in Mumbai’s western suburbs, are reeling under a severe water crisis. While some neighbourhoods have gone without water for a few days at a stretch.

The condition in parts of Ghatkopar, Khar, Kandivali and Chandivali are similar, although not as dire.

On the other hand, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) exclaimed that they are scrambling to repair the pipeline in Thane that ruptured last week when Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) was carrying out excavation for an infrastructure project.

Repair of pipelines in Thane is in full-swing and it is expected to finish repairing by end of the day on Wednesday. This will improve the situation, said an official.

Civic sources said the repairs will cost INR 13 crores.

Meanwhile, the water supply mainly to South Mumbai has been affected, since their primary source of supply comes from Malabar Hill reservoir, which receives water through the water mains in Thane. For nearly three days now, most South Mumbai residents have become dependent on tankers.

However, the prices of water tankers have pumped up drastically. It costs nearly INR 2,000 for 10,000 litres and 6,000 for 20,000 litres.

For those unversed, the BMC meanwhile had imposed a 15% water cut in Mumbai for a month starting March 31, citing repair of the water supply channel that provides water to several parts of the island city and the suburban belt. The portion of this main tunnel that was damaged was also in Thane.

In addition to this, the latest rupture in the Thane pipeline has affected water supply.
