Mumbai: Registration Begins for BMC’s New Sanitary Waste Collection Service

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will begin a new sanitary waste collection service in Mumbai on May 1, 2025. The service is named “Domestic Sanitary and Special Care Waste Collection”. It is meant to safely collect domestic hazardous waste (DHW).

The BMC started the registration for this service on April 22. The authority is now trying to spread awareness and get people involved before the launch. Housing societies, residential complexes, women’s hostels, beauty salons, and educational institutions can register for this service.

A QR code is being shared with registered groups through WhatsApp and other ways. People can scan the QR code to register easily. The registration link is also available online.

Mumbai generates around 7,000 to 8,000 tonnes of solid waste every day. Out of this, about 70 to 80 tonnes are sanitary waste. This includes used sanitary pads, nappies, tampons, condoms, and other personal hygiene items.

It also includes used cotton, bandages with body fluids, expired medicines, syringes, needles, razor blades, and waste from beauty salons like waxing strips and PPE kits. This type of waste is often mixed with regular garbage.

Improper disposal of DHW makes waste processing harder and puts sanitation workers at risk. To treat this kind of waste, BMC has bought plasma treatment machines from Malaysia. The first three machines were installed in 2021. These are located at Oshiwara, Malad, and Dharavi.

Each machine can process four tonnes of DHW. However, only 12 tonnes of DHW are being processed each day. This is because people do not separate the waste properly. The machines are working below their full capacity.

The BMC has now floated tenders for eleven more plasma-based treatment units. These will be placed across the city and nearby areas.

As per sources, BMC has planned a special and safe system for collecting such garbage. For collection, yellow bags will be used to store sanitary waste. The BMC will also carry out awareness campaigns at the places that register. These sessions will guide people on how to separate waste properly.
