The opposition alliance Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is fiercely against the municipality's proposal to charge a user fee for the collection, transportation, processing, and disposal of solid garbage.
For this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has come under fire from the coalition for its proposal to charge INR 100 per month for apartments up to 500 square feet and INR 500 to INR 1,000 for larger apartments.
The planned levy, according to civic officials, is in line with the central government's 2016 Solid Waste Management Rules. According to a Solid Waste Management Department representative, they presented their case to Bhushan Gagrani, the municipal commissioner, on December 16 and are awaiting a decision from him.
Aaditya Thackeray, the leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), told media reporters on December 14 that the BMC had served Mumbai on several occasions and that they have never burdened Mumbai residents with this tax, as the BJP government intends to do.
Thackeray further questioned that will the BMC pay us each time we find a garbage dump on the road? For the past two years, its waste collection has been subpar. He used records and data to reveal the road scam of the BMC, which was under the leadership of the Eknath Shinde administration, during this time. The BJP has just woken up and is requesting a Special Investigation Team (SIT). When he brought up this corruption issue on January 15, 2023, this is the same BJP that heedlessly backed the Shinde dictatorship and continued to do so all since, he said.
If the chief minister was serious about starting again, Aaditya Thackeray stated, he had to make sure that a free and impartial probe was conducted, including the two guardian ministers of Mumbai and the then CM Shinde. The BJP is requesting a SIT after only waking up in response to the elections. Aside from that, they have had the luxury of backing and collaborating with the corrupt regime for the past two years, he continued.
Varsha Gaikwad, the head of the Mumbai Congress, accused the administration of permitting free loot of the BMC's treasury to benefit its contractor friends, citing alleged corruption. Now, in order to hide this egregious mismanagement, it intends to charge Mumbai residents a user fee for the collection and disposal of solid waste, Gaikwad stated.
Mumbai BJP chairman Ashish Shelar responded to the MVA's allegations by stating that Aaditya Thackeray is spreading lies. He is desperate and frustrated. In order to garner votes before the BMC elections, he wishes to propagate a false narrative. He needs to show evidence.
