Two 15-year-old schoolgirls were seriously injured after they came in contact with electric current that allegedly spread through a waterlogged area beneath the LP Bridge in Nerul on Wednesday morning following heavy rainfall.
The injured students, identified as Shubhangi Nalawade and Ujjwala Wagh, were initially rushed to DY Patil Hospital before being shifted to Fortis Hospital in Vashi for further treatment. Doctors said both girls are in stable condition.
According to preliminary information, rainwater had accumulated beneath the LP Bridge near Bikaner Sweets when a suspected short circuit in an electrical wire caused the water to become live. The girls reportedly collapsed after stepping into the electrified water. Local residents and bystanders rescued them and rushed them to hospital.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the short circuit, identify which agency was responsible for the electrical infrastructure, and ascertain how the current spread through the stagnant water.
Following the incident, Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil visited the spot and ordered an inquiry. She directed officials to inspect exposed electrical wires and hazardous installations and to initiate action against those found responsible. The mayor said authorities had already been instructed before the monsoon to inspect and repair exposed distribution panels and damaged electrical infrastructure, and fresh inspections would now be carried out.
The incident has sparked concern among residents, particularly as it occurred in a busy area surrounded by educational institutions, raising questions over monsoon preparedness and coordination among civic agencies.
