The Maharashtra government has sanctioned approximately INR 13 crore to renovate and maintain ND Studio in Karjat, a landmark film production facility established by celebrated art director Nitin Desai.

Spread over 46 acres, the studio came under government control following his death, with the takeover process completed by 2025 to ensure the preservation of its legacy. The redevelopment proposal, submitted by the Maharashtra Film, Theatre and Cultural Development Corporation, focuses on comprehensive upgrades, including the refurbishment of around 100 residential rooms and bungalows, extensive structural repairs, and the construction of a protective boundary wall near the lake to prevent damage.

ND Studio has long been a cornerstone of the Indian film industry, serving as the backdrop for grand productions such as Jodhaa Akbar, Bajirao Mastani, and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. It is known for its elaborate permanent sets, including palace interiors, village landscapes, and internationally styled locations, along with a film museum that showcases cinematic art and history. Even today, the studio continues to host film and television shoots, pre-wedding photography, and large-scale events.

Through this phased renovation plan, the government aims not only to restore the studio’s infrastructure but also to strengthen its position as a premier destination for filmmaking, tourism, and cultural activities, ensuring that it remains a vital creative hub in the years to come.
