At least 11 people, who sat on the open ground at Maharashtra Bhushan award event in Navi Mumbai, have died due to heat stroke and dehydration on Sunday, April 16.

While, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s office has confirmed 11 deaths, the officials pegged the unconfirmed number at 13. Of the total deceased, eight are women, mostly aged.

A total of 123 people complained of heat-related health ailments, like dehydration, during the event. They were immediately referred to the 30 medical booths set up at the venue. Thirteen of the patients, who needed further treatment, were shifted to different private hospitals, said revenue department official, who was on duty at the venue.

A total of 30 doctors were deployed at the medical booths that had intensive care unit (ICU) facilities to treat people at the venue.

Moreover, at least 50 people were admitted to hospitals and 24 were still undergoing treatment while some have been discharged after treatment, confirmed the CM, who rushed at Kamothe’s MGM hospital to check upon them.

Immediately, he announced INR 5 lakh compensation for next of kin of the deceased.

Among the deceased, Jayashree Patil (54), from Raigad, suffered a heart attack at the Kharghar venue itself.

Officials stated that the casualties may rise as some of those hospitalised are believed to be critical with cardiac problems and fluctuations in blood sugar levels.

A crowd of lakhs sat under a scorching sun for over nearly three hours (11:30 am to 1 pm) at the Kharghar International Corporate Park grounds while the award was being conferred on social activist Dattatreya Narayan alias Appasaheb Dharmadhikari.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Kapil Patil were on the dais, which was covered, along with other VIPs.

Fadnavis tweeted the government will pay for treatment of those who suffered heat-related illness.

"It is very unfortunate and painful that some members participating in the Maharashtra Bhushan award ceremony this morning died due to heatstroke... We share the grief of their families," Fadnavis tweeted in Marathi.

An official pointed out that the timing of the outdoor event goes against the heat action plan proposed for each district in the summer. For Thane, the observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 38 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
