Mumbai's massive housing redevelopment effort has reached a milestone after 864 families received keys to their new homes at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar BDD Sankul in Naigaon.
Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has played a key role in the implementation of the project.
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Monday, March 16, handed over the keys to their owners under the BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project. Around 1,000 acres of land have been opened up for cluster redevelopment in Mumbai to ensure residents are rehabilitated within the city, he said.

It aims to provide modern homes along with a better way of living and safe environment to the residents of the city's historic chawl settlements.
The event was attended by Devendra Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde, Ajit Pawar, Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe, Housing Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, local MLA Kalidas Kolambkar, Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, and Ritu Tawde, Mayor of Mumbai.
The moment marked a major step forward for families who have been waiting for upgraded housing through the redevelopment initiative.
The housing complex has been designed with improved infrastructure and amenities to improve the quality of life of the families living in the new flats.
These flats are part of the first phase of the Naigaon BDD Chawl redevelopment undertaken by MHADA’s Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board. The redeveloped complex, named the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar BDD Complex, spans 6.45 hectares. The Naigaon BDD complex currently houses 3,344 tenants in 42 ground-plus-three-storey chawls. Under the redevelopment plan, 20 23-storey rehabilitation towers will be constructed in two phases.
Officials said the redevelopment project is being carried out in multiple phases.
The first phase involved distribution of flats in Worli, while the second phase covers the Naigaon complex, where the latest set of apartments has been handed over to residents, the statement said.
The authorities aim to provide new homes to all eligible residents under the BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project by 2029.
