North Mumbai MP Gopal Shetty and Shiv Sena leader Gajanan Kirtikar jointly inaugurated the new Out Patient Department (OPD) services at the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Hospital at Andheri on Sunday, August 14. They also laid foundation of the EPFO Staff Quarters at Borivali virtually. Director General of ESIC Dr. Rajendra Kumar was present at the occasion.

The OPD services at ESIC Hospital, Andheri will augment and strengthen the medical infrastructure of ESIC in Maharashtra State and will cater to the medical needs of Insured workers and their family members. Earlier, in 2018, after a fire accident at ESIC Hospital, Andheri; the entire operation of the hospital was temporarily shifted to ESIC Hospital, Kandivali. The upgradation and expansion of ESIC Hospital, Andheri is almost complete and will soon resume providing in-patient medical services too. The OPD services being started are General Medicine, Orthopedic, Urology, Cardiology, ENT, Gastroenterology, Dermatology and etc. Around 25 lakh ESI beneficiaries of Mumbai area will be benefitted with start of OPD services. The Project Cost of the upgradation of this hospital is Rs. 260 Crores. 

The EPFO Staff Quarters Complex, Borivali, of which the foundation is being laid will be built on 7440.90 sq. meters of land with a project cost of around Rs. 566 Crores. This housing project will cater to the residential needs of around 1900 staff of EPFO. 

ESI Scheme in Maharashtra

In the State of Maharashtra, ESI scheme is applicable in 33 districts of Maharashtra State. ESI Scheme is supervised through its Regional Office Mumbai and 06 Sub Regional Offices and caters to the medical needs of about 40 lakh insured persons and 1.5 crore dependents working in 2.35 lakh units. Maharashtra State has 82 ESIC Branch Offices including 14 DCBOs. The total number of ESI Hospitals in the State is 15 (03 ESIC Hospitals and 12 ESIS Hospitals). Maharashtra has 92 dispensaries (ESIC - 14 DCBOs, ESIS - 82 dispensaries) and 598 insured doctors. 175 hospitals have been empaneled to provide secondary medical care and 139 hospitals have been empaneled to provide super specialty treatment in the state of Maharashtra.

ESI Scheme in India

The ESIC is a pioneer Social Security organization providing comprehensive social security benefits like reasonable Medical Care and a range of Cash Benefits in times of need such as employment injury, sickness, death etc. It is covering about 3.42 Crores of family units of workers and providing matchless cash benefits and reasonable medical care to its more than 13 crore beneficiaries of 611 districts country wide. Today, its infrastructure has increased many folds with 1574 Dispensaries, 161 ESI Hospitals, 8 Medical Colleges, 2 Dental Colleges, 2 Nursing Colleges, 604 Branch Offices, 96 DCBOs and 64 Regional & Sub-Regional Offices.
