In order to ensure safety of commuters, the speed limit has been revised on the Mumbai-Pune expressway. This development came after a survey was directed by a team of experts, which included top officials. It was conducted by the State Highway officials such as Pune division, Raigad zone, Panvel and local police on the expressway limit, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and IRB Infra Development.
The survey was conducted for 15 days. However, the decision was taken after a joint meeting held on April 15. During the meeting, it was reportedly discussed that even low speeds of vehicles can cause accidents.
Later, additional director general of police (Traffic), Maharashtra, Sukhwinder Singh, issued a notice in this regard and said that an updated has been done as commuters faced difficulties with reducing speed of the vehicles as limit in the ghats is very low. The change aims to reduce accidents.
Upon entering the ghat section, the stipulated speed limit for light vehicles should decrease drastically from 100 km/hour to 50 km/hour, due to the steep terrain. Speed cameras will be capturing the movement of vehicles, the notification further read.
