As Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to scale up every day inoculation numbers in the city, now NGOs will be a part of the civic body’s vaccination drive.

BMC has allowed nursing houses with greater than 50 beds to use as vaccination centres and for the personal sector to stay open 24×7. Several hospitals have prolonged their vaccination classes till evening to gauge the response of the public. But they’re yet to begin a 24-hour vaccination facility.

Currently, vaccination turnout is basically restricted to the centre. It has been observed that slum turnout has been low because of poor consciousness, lack of time to attend in queue and vaccine hesitancy in some pockets.

The civic body has signed an MoU with Bharatiya Jain Sangathana (BJS) to aid it in vaccination.

Moreover, BJS will set up help desks in vaccination centres to address the queries of people and coordinate between vaccination officials and recipients. It will also begin awareness drives in slums to encourage them to get vaccinated.

The NGO will also follow up post-vaccination with recipients. It will use mobile vans to raise awareness.

Earlier, the NGO worked with BMC in testing, treating and tracking high-risk contacts during the past year. It was sponsored by the Credai-Maharashtra Chamber of Housing Industry and Step One.

Starting this week, Nair hospital, SevenHills Hospital, BKC Jumbo centre, Mulund Jumbo centre and Dahisar jumbo centre will begin administering Covaxin together with Covishield doses.

So far, Maharashtra has vaccinated 10.98 lakh people aged above 60 years and people aged 45-59 years with comorbidity and coated 10 per cent of its focused inhabitants. Meanwhile, in Mumbai, 2.77 lakh folks on this pool have obtained their first dose of vaccine.
