The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has started a survey to find out the exact number of illegal buildings in Navi Mumbai. This action follows the instructions of the Bombay High Court (HC).

On January 31, a bench of Justices gave the directive to NMMC. They asked the NMMC to act against buildings without commencement or occupancy certificates. The court asked for a detailed report on the demolition of illegal buildings built after 2015. However, they didn't ask for fines.

Reports suggest that the survey has been started. The official also mentioned that action would be taken against structures built before 2015. It is believed that around 4,500 illegal buildings need to be demolished. Most of these buildings are in prohibited zones.

The NMMC has started vacating two buildings in Sector 16, Nerul. These buildings were declared illegal by the High Court. Similar actions are being taken in other parts of the satellite city.

The High Court has asked the NMMC to investigate illegal construction under Section 52A of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act. This section allows the state government to create a plan for compounding illegal construction. However, this clause applies only to construction completed before December 31, 2015.

Kishor Shetty filed a public interest lawsuit. He raised concerns about illegal projects at NMMC. He asked for the necessary actions against them. He also requested that the court hold the ward officer responsible for these illegal structures. The High Court has scheduled a hearing for April 3rd. The NMMC is expected to present the survey report at this hearing.
