The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has decided to take strict action against the property tax defaulters, which includes the auction of their properties, an official said on Sunday.

It has been 21 days since the NMMC issued property confiscation and auction notice to those defaulters who have a large amount of property tax arrears.

NMMC Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar has instructed the officials to prepare an action plan for the next legal action against the arrears and start the action during the review meeting of the property tax department.

He also took a review of the pending taxes and directed the officials to take action against those who have not paid tax despite notices and warnings.

Moreover, reports stated that only INR 163 crores have been collected towards property tax this year.

Notices of foreclosure and auction were issued to 26 property tax arrears that were due between June 1 to 15. Similarly, notices were issued to 49 defaulters arrears that were due between June 16 and July 2. Thereafter, between July 3 and 15, 53 more arrears have been issued with confiscation and auction notices.

Hence, the civic body identified 128 big defaulters and sent notices to them. Their collective outstanding amount is INR 188 crores. They were given sufficient time for paying the outstanding amount. But despite that, they have not paid so far, an official said.

Meanwhile, these 53 property holders have property tax arrears of over INR 75.96 crores.

These include 3 properties in the Belapur division, 9 properties in the Nerul division, 6 properties in the Vashi division, 9 properties in the Turbhe division, 11 properties in the Koparkhairane division and 8 properties in the Ghansoli division and 7 properties in Airoli division.
