On Thursday, January 6, the Maharashtra Health Department stated that there is no consideration of lockdown as of now, stated news agency ANI. The state health department added that the government will consider lockdown or lockdown-like restrictions after the medical oxygen demand for Maharashtra goes beyond 800 metric tonnes/ day or over 40 per cent of the COVID-19 beds in hospitals are occupied. 

The health department further remarked that the current surge in coronavirus cases may peak in mid-February and could subside by mid-March. 

Moreover, the health department added that it had stopped genome sequencing of COVID-19 samples after 55 per cent of the samples in the last genome sequencing were confirmed for the Omicron variant. Therefore, reports speculate that an order for a fresh sero survey is likely this week. 

On Thursday, Maharashtra Minister Amit Deshmukh was quoted by ANI saying, "At present, we don't think that cinema halls or malls need to be closed. But if something is to be done in the larger public interest, State Cabinet will discuss these things and the CM will take a final call". 

Based on reports, Additional Chief Secretary Health Dr Pradeep Vyas predicted that an active caseload of nearly two lakhs by the third week of January. 

On Thursday, state public health minister, Rajesh Tope said that whilst the number of cases are growing hospitalisations and number of casualties aren't. He added that medical oxygen demand hasn't gone up. In the coming days, the state will conduct a serosurvey, he said, based on accounts.
