An online petition has been filed in Mumbai via change.org to save the iconic Parsi Gate situated in Marine Drive. This comes after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was believed to be considering the relocation of this site for the coastal road project. The petition also points out that the civic body hasn’t acquired a NOC (no objection certificate) from the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee towards this purpose. This online petition has received over 1,000 signatures already,

“The gate is carved with Zoroastrian motifs and made of Malad stone with steps between them to access the beach now called Chotta Chowpatty where all Mumbaikars could offer their prayers and offerings to the sea,” the petitioner Havovi Sukhadwala said.

“Zoroastrians of Mumbai have been paying their respect to Avan Yazad [water deity] for over a century at the Parsi Gate. Hindus particularly use this safe access constructed to immerse the offerings on Poornima and ashes from the Chandanwadi crematorium at Marine Lines,” the petition read while adding that BMC’s plans to relocate this structure “constitutes change or alteration as defined under Section 2(b) of The Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991.”

It is also pointed out that Parsi Gate was recognized as a place of worship in the 2016 Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report published for the Coastal Road project. Parsi Gate was built by Pallonji Mistry with philanthropist Bhagojisheth Kheer in 1915 and has been in existence even before Marine Drive was established.
