The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took action against the contractors of small pumping stations for failing to set up the system properly and not running it at full capacity, as required by the tender conditions. Operators at Hindmata, Gandhi Market, Yellow Gate and Chunabhatti Small Udanchan Kendra have been fined INR 10 lakh each, totaling INR 40 lakh.
The BMC has set up 10 small drainage centers at various locations to prevent rainwater from accumulating in urban areas, to drain rainwater accumulating in low-lying areas, to ensure smooth road traffic, and to ensure faster drainage of rainwater. The operation of those centers is done through a contractor. For this, the terms and conditions have also been fixed as mentioned in the tender. Also, instructions were given to the concerned to make the entire system operational by May 25, 2025.
Mumbai witnessed heavy rains on Monday, May 26. In just 13 hours, 250 mm of rain was recorded at many places. All the systems of the civic body were working in the area due to the heavy rains. Despite this, citizens were greatly inconvenienced due to waterlogging in low-lying areas of Hindmata, Gandhi Market, Yellow Gate and Chunabhatti due to heavy rains. It was observed that the small drainage system designated for rainwater drainage was not operational with sufficient capacity and on time.
