Several Residents Injured After 3-storey Chawl Collapses in Mumbai’s Bandra East

At least seven people were injured and several others are feared trapped under the debris after a portion of a ground-plus-three-storey structure in Mumbai’s Bandra (East) collapsed early on Friday, July 18.

The structure—identified as Chawl No. 37 in Bharat Nagar—came crashing down around 7:50 am, reportedly following a cylinder blast inside the premises.

So far 12 people have been pulled out of the debris. All the injured were immediately admitted to Bhabha Hospital, where their treatment has started.

BMC has deployed fire engines for the rescue operation, and officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), and the Mumbai Police are present at the spot.

According to the officials from the disaster cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), all the injured have been admitted to Bhabha Municipal General Hospital, and the status of their current condition is awaited.

While speaking to reporters, a local resident of Bharat Nagar area said, "The reason for the blast is not confirmed. The incident happened near the mosque and caused damage to the mosque as well... The fire brigade is conducting a rescue operation. All the people have been safely rescued. There are no casualties reported so far."

The cause of the collapse is not yet known, but civic authorities are expected to launch an investigation once the rescue work concludes.
