In recent developments, the association of suburban train commuters have demanded the local trains to be resumed for the general public.

This comes as the state government begins the process of easing the coronavirus-induced restrictions across Maharashtra. Earlier on April 15, with the second wave of the coronavirus hitting the state, the local train services were halted for the general public for the second time.

At the moment, the Mumbai locals are operational only for people working in essential services and citizens travelling for vaccination or hospital. Meanwhile, passenger associations have further demanded an increase in safety measures for women commuters in the compartments for women.

Moreover, according to reports, nearly three million passengers are travelling by local trains on both the Central and Western Railway.

On the other hand, earlier on Monday, May 24, while talking to media, Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Vijay Wadettiwar said that the general public would not be allowed to commute on Mumbai suburban locals till further orders. He added that this was not possible at least till June 15, 2021.

This development comes at a time when the Maharashtra government has indicated that after June 1, the lockdown in the state would be gradually eased in four phases.

The government is planning to allow the general public to travel in Mumbai local trains in the fourth and final phase. Currently, only government, BMC and essential services staff are allowed to travel in suburban trains, the minister added.
