Navi Mumbai residents are eagerly awaiting the official inauguration of the final leg of the Belapur-Uran route. It is an important railway project aimed at improving connectivity in the region. Although the track has been certified by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) for passenger train operations in March, the services are yet to commence.

If reports are to be believed, the work of Uran railway has almost completed and it is ready to open its door for commuters.

The project with total length of 26.7 km was completed in two phases. The first phase, connecting Nerul/Belapur and Kharkopar at a distance of 12.4 km, was opened to passengers in November 2018. After commencement, this stretch saw significant improvement in the connectivity.

The remaining 14.3km section has now been successfully completed, bringing the project closer to its ultimate goal.

Experts stated that the primary goal is likely to improve transportation options for the planned Navi Mumbai Airport.

Currently passengers can travel from Nerul/Belapur to Kharkopar. However, the final phase of operation will allow people to reach Uran from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in around 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Initially slated for completion by September 2022, the project faced opposition from local villagers over compensation issues, resulting in a major setback to its progress.

According to sources, railway authorities are currently preparing to start the final phase of local services on the Belapur-Uran route.
